The cider research program has evaluated 73 different cider cultivars. Observations were recorded for vigor, growth habit, disease susceptibility, and fruit and juice quality attributes. Sensory evaluation of some single-varietal ciders was performed by professional cider makers in the region.
Classification is with the English system, which divides cider apples into 4 categories based on the tannins and acid present in the pressed juice. The orchard site has a marine climate with cool summers and mild winters. Some cultivars are classified differently at this site than they were classified in England.

Data collection is from 2002 to 2017, and average values are presented. Bloom density and productivity ratings are subjective, using a scale of 1-5 where 1 = very sparse bloom/fruit, 2 = light bloom/fruiting, 3 = moderate bloom/fruiting, 4 = abundant bloom/fruiting, 5 = snowball bloom/overloaded fruiting. Blind wood rating is subjective, using a scale of 1-5 where 1 = no bare areas, 2 = few bare areas 4-6 inches, 3 = several bare areas 4-6 inches, 4 = several bare areas 8-12 inches, 5 = numerous branches with bare areas 12 inches or more. Juice characteristics were measured for 250 mL. of juice, and juice yield was measured from 25 fruit (2015-2017 only). Observations were recorded for disease susceptibility, vigor, and growth habit. Sensory evaluation of single-varietal ciders was performed by professional cider makers in the region.
